Grape Willemite Calcite Andradite Aegirine

Grape Willemite Calcite Andradite Aegirine

Another Franklin NJ fluorescent hand sized specimen. In natural light, the willemite has a reddish grape color. But it glows the same intense green seen in most willemite from this locality. There’s a small amount of red fluorescent calcite scattered through a non-fluorescent andradite/aegirine matrix. There’s more images of this specimen and other from this locale at the Eastern United States page. -dM

Esperite Delight

Esperite Delight

Finally got an esperite specimen from Franklin, New Jersey. And it’s both brightly fluorescent and a beauty in natural light. The esperite glows yellow, willemite green, and calcite red. The dark black non-fluorescent franklinite provides a nice contrast. I first saw Franklin esperite almost 60 years ago. Back then it was identified as calcium larsenite. It was prominently featured in Nature’s Hidden Rainbows, a book […]

Glass Frog

Glass Frog

Look at those eyes. And that translucent, lime green skin. Notice the white highlights. This glass frog is beautiful isn’t it? I’ve never see a living one. But I’ve found a real glass one, a uranium glass one. As a production art piece, it lacks those eyes and many of the living details. But as a piece of art, I like it. I’m not sure […]

Yellowfin at the Farmer’s Market

Yellowfin at the Farmer’s Market

This time of year it gets very hot and humid early. It’s best to have everything done by 10am. And spend the rest of the day chilling out. So, this morning, it was time for an early visit to the Ft. Pierce farmer’s market. Hadn’t been there for awhile. But by the time we got there it was already hot. So, I decided to let […]

Wyoming Apiary Map

Wyoming Apiary Map

A new Wyoming Apiary Map is available online. This reflects quite a change at the Wyoming Department of Agriculture, where the Bee Laws were an informal means of maintaining a ‘good old boys beekeeper’s club’. The apiary records were such an embarrassing mess, that the regulators often asked about the need for bee regulation. I suspect they hoped the whole thing would go away before […]
