Grape Willemite Calcite Andradite Aegirine

Grape Willemite Calcite Andradite Aegirine

Another Franklin NJ fluorescent hand sized specimen. In natural light, the willemite has a reddish grape color. But it glows the same intense green seen in most willemite from this locality. There’s a small amount of red fluorescent calcite scattered through a non-fluorescent andradite/aegirine matrix. There’s more images of this specimen and other from this locale at the Eastern United States page. -dM

Like most ore specimens from this locality, it’s got a satisfying […]

Esperite Delight

Esperite Delight

Finally got an esperite specimen from Franklin, New Jersey. And it’s both brightly fluorescent and a beauty in natural light. The esperite glows yellow, willemite green, and calcite red. The dark black non-fluorescent franklinite provides a nice contrast. I first saw Franklin esperite almost 60 years ago. Back then it was identified as calcium larsenite. It was prominently featured in Nature’s Hidden Rainbows, a book […]

Another Langban Specimen

Another Langban Specimen

This new specimen is comprised of a rare combination of: svabite – orange calcite – red-orange contrasted against a dark, non-fluorescent matrix. Nice! Still not much chance of my going to Switzerland, although my son base jumps off their rock walls in his flying squirrel suit. So, I’m thankful they are occasionally sold on eBay by sellers like Mark Cole at minershop.com That’s where I […]

Tennessee Quartz

Tennessee Quartz

I’ve acquired another specimen from Mark at Minershop. It’s a 4 inch quartz specimen from Woodbury, TN. Mark says: Yellow fluorescent quartz is a rarity (or any fluorescence in quartz crystals) and these are quite striking. In this piece transparent quartz crystals (fluorescent yellow), the yellow has two shades – bright yellow and bright mustard.  Blue/wht fluorescence is calcite we believe. Background The Elmwood Zinc mine […]

Calcite and Svabite

I’ve put it in the Eastern Hemisphere Rocks page where there’s a natural light image and more information. -dM
